【Joint Statement by Australian Christians regarding HKSAR Amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance】

Joint Statement by a group of Australian Christians : We strongly urge the Hong Kong SAR Government to adhere to the one-nation, two-system system and withdraw the amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance. It should consult the public opinion extensively and fully consider the opinions of Hong Kong’s legal bodies and international public opinion.

"Rejecting lies": Each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. (Ephesians 4:25)

We are a group of pastors and Christians from different Christian denominations, churches and institutions in Australia, agreeing that:
1) The amendments are not the only way to achieve justice in the Taiwan murder case. Even if the amendments are passed, they will not produce the expected results. The Hong Kong legal body has proposed a number of proposals and the HKSAR Government has not fully considered it.
2) After the amendments, the government can transfer suspects to areas where the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights has not been implemented. It is doubtful that the personal safety and private property of Hong Kong people can be fully protected after the amendments.
3) After the amendments, the Hong Kong courts have no right to assess whether the legal systems and procedures adopted by the requesting government are fair and humane, and it is difficult to ensure the protection of human rights and fair trials.

We believe:
1) God gives everyone dignity and freedom. Any legislation and amendment to law on earth must consider both human rights and justice.
2) The government is an instrument of God and has the obligation to protect the freedom of the general public from fear.
3) The HKSAR Government has the responsibility to respond directly to all doubts about the amendments and to fully explain how human rights will be protected.

God ordained the Church and called the community of believers to witness the truth, to bless the neighbours, to walk with the oppressed, and to preach and witness to this unbelieving generation the hope, justice, and love that God has given. We respect the Government's authority within the boundary of truth. We encourage believers who are citizens to seek consensus with openness and with a fair manner. We appeal to believers who are decision makers to protect the freedom and safety of Hong Kong citizens with an attitude of humility.

*** The above appeals only represent our personal conscience and calling, and do not represent any churches, institutional or denominational positions. ***
